Kyiv Bucharest Distance: 1,087 to 1,100 km and Travel Time
The distance from Kyiv to Bucharest ranges from 1,087 to 1,100 km. The small difference depends on the road selected for your particular journey. You can view the general route to Romania using the route on the map.
Driving takes approximately 14 hours. Border waiting time is not included because it varies from one journey to another. We cannot predict exactly how long the crossing will take.
We usually depart at dawn. This means you may reach Bucharest in the evening or during the night. However, border queues can significantly affect your arrival time.
Because arrival may be late, we recommend scheduling business meetings in Bucharest for the following day. If you need to check into an apartment or hotel by a specific time, mention it when booking. Our manager will consider this when planning your departure. Bucharest is Romania’s largest city, so provide your complete destination address, including the district.
Despite the considerable distance, the journey can be completed within one long day. You decide when to stop for lunch or coffee, and the driver includes these breaks in the schedule.
This route is often chosen by passengers traveling to Romania for work or to visit relatives. Others travel to Bucharest to catch flights to further destinations.
How to Get from Kyiv to Bucharest: Train, Bus or Car
There are three ways to travel between Kyiv and Bucharest, with noticeable differences in journey duration. We compare travel times and convenience without considering ticket prices.
A direct train operates between the two capitals, but the journey takes approximately 24 hours. It is the slowest of the three options. You also need separate transportation to the railway station. Train departure days and times may not always suit your plans. Trains and buses operate from stations that are rarely close to your destination address.
The bus journey takes at least 17.5 hours. Buses follow the operator’s schedule, make stops for all passengers and arrive at a bus station.
A separate car completes the journey in approximately 14 hours of driving. Compared with a bus, this can save several hours. Compared with the train, the difference is almost half a day.
The advantage is not limited to travel time. A Kyiv Bucharest journey by car starts directly outside your home. You do not need to arrive early at a station or wait for boarding. After arrival, there is no need to find a taxi while carrying suitcases.
Bags, boxes and suitcases remain in the same luggage compartment throughout the journey. You do not need to check them separately or keep them on your lap, as sometimes happens on buses. In the car, you can recline your seat, request a break or enjoy a quieter journey.
You choose your departure time without depending on someone else’s schedule. This is particularly useful when you have a flight or your first work shift ahead. Passengers traveling for work can arrive directly at their accommodation with all their belongings.
Families with young children, older passengers and travelers carrying bulky luggage particularly appreciate avoiding changes of transport.
Otopeni Airport (OTP): Leaving Kyiv for a Bucharest Flight
Ukrainian airports are closed to passenger flights, so many travelers depart from Bucharest instead.
Romania’s largest airport is Henri Coandă International Airport, located in Otopeni (OTP). The car takes you directly to the terminal, so you do not need additional public transportation.
We calculate your pickup time by working backward from your flight departure and allowing extra time for border control. Due to the journey’s length, an early morning flight requires leaving Kyiv the previous day. Our manager will suggest a suitable pickup time for your confirmation. After a long journey, it helps to have time for a meal and to reorganize your luggage before check-in. We arrange departure times in advance because early flights require an additional travel allowance.
Before departure, check your flight details and terminal on the Bucharest airport website.
The same arrangement works for return journeys. After landing at OTP, our driver meets you near the arrivals exit. We track your flight online, so a delay simply means the driver waits longer. That is why providing your flight number when booking is important.
Returning after a flight with several suitcases is easier this way. You do not need to search for a train or bus. Instead, you enter the car that takes you directly home to Kyiv.
We use a similar approach for other scheduled flights. More details are available on our airport transfers page.
Route, Border and What the Price Includes
We determine the exact route to Romania on the evening before your journey. Our manager checks border traffic and recommends a crossing with shorter queues. Once you agree, we confirm the route.
You complete border control in the same vehicle that picked you up in Kyiv. There is no need to change vehicles, carry luggage across the checkpoint or cross on foot.
Prices start from UAH 31,600 for the entire vehicle, not for each passenger. Everyone traveling together can share the total cost. The price agreed before departure remains unchanged during the journey. If the number of passengers or suitcases changes, inform our manager before your travel date.
Groups of three or more passengers traveling with suitcases may find a minivan more comfortable.
Romania is a member of the European Union. Dogs and cats therefore need a veterinary passport and the required accompanying documents for entry. Also check the validity of your international passport. It must meet entry requirements and cover your entire stay in Romania.
To book, provide your travel date, pickup address in Kyiv and destination in Bucharest or flight number from OTP.
