Kyiv Prague Distance: 1,397 km and Travel Time
The distance from Kyiv to Prague is 1,397 km. You can view the complete route through Poland using the route on the map.
Driving takes from 14 to 16 hours. Crossing the Ukrainian border adds waiting time that cannot be predicted accurately in advance. Therefore, we do not include border delays in the estimated driving time.
This is more than a short journey. It is a full trip between countries that requires careful planning. Prepare for it as you would for a connecting flight, allowing extra time for possible delays. We recommend avoiding important appointments on the morning after your arrival.
There is no direct train between the two capitals, so traveling by rail requires several connections. Buses also operate on this route, but they arrive at bus stations according to the operator’s schedule.
Traveling by car removes these inconveniences. Train and bus schedules determine when you leave, while a car allows you to choose your departure time. You do not need to carry suitcases between trains and platforms or find a taxi from the station. The driver picks you up at home and takes you directly to your destination in Prague. You can choose any district of the city by providing the address.
If you are relocating, the car’s luggage compartment can accommodate more belongings than a standard passenger ticket allows.
Kyiv Prague via Poland: Border and Route to Czechia
The route to Czechia passes through Poland. During one journey, you travel through three countries, with the main scheduled border control at the Ukrainian border.
Border checks take place at the crossing between Ukraine and Poland, where authorities from both countries inspect travel documents. Several checkpoints are available, and traffic conditions change daily. The evening before departure, our manager checks the queues and recommends a crossing with fewer vehicles.
You normally complete border checks while remaining in the vehicle, unless border officers instruct otherwise. There is no need to carry your belongings across the checkpoint on foot. Every passenger must present valid travel documents, including an international passport.
Poland and Czechia are both members of the Schengen Area, so there is normally no systematic passport control between them. Temporary border checks may still apply. Czechia is also a member of the European Union, with similar general rules for pets and luggage.
After crossing the Ukrainian border, the car continues west along Polish roads. The route passes near Katowice. If your destination is Silesia rather than Czechia, consider our separate Kyiv Katowice transfer.
The car then enters Czechia and continues towards Prague. Under normal Schengen conditions, there is no additional scheduled passport inspection at the Polish border with Czechia. In Prague, the driver stops outside your chosen apartment, hotel or office.
Return journeys on the Prague Kyiv route are also available. We pick you up at your address in Prague and follow the same route through Poland.
Over 14 Hours on the Road: How to Prepare
The Kyiv Prague journey is among the longest routes in our catalogue. Prepare to spend almost an entire day traveling, from early morning until late evening or night.
We usually recommend departing early in the morning, so getting enough sleep the previous night is important. This gives you a chance to reach the Ukrainian border during daylight, although crossing times cannot be guaranteed. The remaining journey continues along Polish and Czech roads. In winter, daylight hours are shorter, so the final section may take place after dark.
The journey can be divided into two unequal sections. The Ukrainian roads and the border crossing with Poland form the first part. Keep your travel documents readily accessible during this section. Afterward, the long drive through Poland gives you time to rest, read or sleep.
You decide when to stop for lunch, coffee or a short walk. The driver includes these breaks in the route and considers them when calculating your arrival time. This is particularly important if you have a flight or appointment scheduled. You can bring snacks, but a proper hot meal during the journey is also recommended.
What to Bring and How to Rest on the Way to Prague
Keep everyone’s international passports in a bag within easy reach rather than inside a suitcase. A phone charger, water and a blanket will also be useful, especially for the evening section. The driver places larger belongings in the luggage compartment before leaving Kyiv.
Comfortable clothing and a neck pillow can help you rest during the long drive after the border. Keep your laptop nearby if you plan to work during the journey. While traveling, you can read, watch films or sleep. Older passengers may prefer more frequent breaks to stretch their legs. The driver can stop at the next suitable rest area.
Parents traveling with young children should prepare carefully for such a long journey. Useful information is available on our trips with children page. Dogs and cats can also travel with you. For entry into the European Union, pets need a veterinary passport and any other documents required by current regulations.
